A Team Matches

St Fillan's 1 - 1 St Blane's

Saturday 23rd March 2014

Bi-Millenium match 2

Smashing day for football again. This was match 2 of the Bi-Millenium tournament and we had lost match one and were looking to get some points on the board. Turns out St Blane's won their league and they provided stiff opposition. Their keeper was excellent and as it happens he is the Glasgow Select keeper. St Blane's scored first against the run of play with a long ball from that keeper. We failed to deal with it properly and Roddy in goals got lobbed, disappointing. We had all the rest of the game and the pressure but simply couldn't convert that into goals due to the keeper. Then we had a corner and another great delivery from Aeden put the ball right on Evan Newbury's head which he duly converted (goal of the match). Great set piece Aeden ! Liam Comasky got man of the match for a very good performance with a special mention to Jamie Devlin again for a very good performance in an advanced position this time.

St Paul's 4 - 1 St Fillan's

Saturday 15th March 2014

Bi Millenium Cup 1

Another good day for football and the boys performed well. The scoreline flatters St Paul's as we were definitely in it for a long time and probably gave them a scare. Jamie Devlin was man of the match and Roddy Colquhoun was a special mention in goals as was Joe Coyle with a good disruptive performance which is the role we gave him. Aeden Crumlish gets goal of the match for another sublime lob.

Well done to all and here's to Saturday and game 2 of the cup..

St Fillan's 5 -1 Lourde's

Saturday

8th March 2014

Friendly match 8

Another cold but good day for football and as usual we were slow to start and the game could have gone either way till we scored. Then we scored again and again so the result looks good but the match was tighter than the scoreline suggests. Aeden was on fire again and scored a few good goals for goal of the match. Michael Tomkins was man of the match again (I don't know where he gets the energy from) and Roddy Colquhoun did well for us in goals. Joe Coyle gets a special mention too as a much improved player, doing really well in front of our defence for this game.

Good result against a usually strong team.

St Fillan's 2 - 1 JPII

Saturday 1st March 2014

League match 8

League winners 2013/2014

Smashing day for football again and the sun shone on us literally and figuratively. We started slow as usual but created a bundle of chances without executing them. Eventually we sent Aeden through one on one with JPII's excellent keeper but there was only going to be one winner here. A brilliantly and calmly executed lob put us in the lead (Goal of the match to Aeden). Not long after though we gifted JPII a goal and then looked a little rocky till the coaching staff (Mark and I taking credit) put Dominic Harrison (captain) into defence and sent our secret weapon (Evan McFadden) up front. This resulted in the goal we deserved and we finished the game and the league on a high.. Man of the match went to Michael Tomkins who put in another powerhouse performance, with Mark Birrell getting passer of the match and Evan McFadden earning himself a special mention for being Evan (secret weapon).

League winners 2013/2014, great job boys, well done, never lost a match.

St Mirin's 1 - 8 St Fillan's

Saturday 1st February2014

League match 7

A very cold day that had even the Janitor out sypathising with the parents and passing out Bovril (where's mine !). Once again the boys started very slowly with St Mirin scoring first putting us 1-0 down. Great spirit from the boys saw us come back from that to score a good few goals (8) and run out comfortable winners. Goal of the match went to Aeden "Van Persie" Crumlish with a sublime composed finish. Man of the match went to Mark Birrell who has been listening to the coaches and has vastly improved his decision making, 'when to dribble and when to pass'. Roddy Colquhoun also gets a special mention for going in goals for us and doing a fine job. Well done boys.

St Fillan's 3 - 9  St Monica's

Saturday 11th January 2014

Carruth Cup 2nd Round

A cold day for many reasons, not least the result. We started well and I had asked the team for three goals by half time. We got that and all in the garden was looking rosy until just before half time when we lost a silly goal. We then proceeded to lose 8 more (count them...8 !) The coaching staff (me) were at a loss, it really was unclear as to why we just collapsed in 30 minutes. Pass marks went to Michael Tomkins, Roddy Colquhoun and Dominic Harrison. A bad day at the office. Least said....

St Fillan's 5 - 0 St Francis

Saturday 14th December 2013

League match 6

Man of the match was the outstanding Evan Newbury who scored 4 goals...Surprisingly goal of the match went to Joe Rigley, a cracker. Boys playing really good football and keeping a clean sheet, starting to look quite formidable. Good work boys.

Friendly on Thursday 12th December v OLA

The boys were warned not to score too many (too strong for OLA) and to play good football. What was most impressive is that the boys did exactly that. Mark Birrell scored a cracking shot and there was some great end to end football being played, good to see and good practice for matches later on.

St Fillan's 12 - 1  St Angela's

Saturday 7th December 2013

Friendly match 7

Played 3 x 30 mins to give the boys a good run out and to let St Angela's get organised. Again boys played very well and Aeden Crumlish and Daniel Medford were "man of the match's" with Mark Birrell getting "goal of the match" after a cheeky keepy up before turning and scoring ,...skill !

St Fillan's 3 - 4  St Mirin's

Saturday 30th November 2013

Friendly match 6

A friendly v St Anne's was always going to be a good test of character for the boys and so it turned out. Michael Gallagher (P5) was in goals and despite the scoreline impressed. Good handling skills, good awareness and positioning. Two goals of the match for this with Aeden Crumlish curling in another corner kick courtesy of a defender. Shay also scored a cracker with his knee, interesting. I have to confess that I have forgotten who was man of the match for this, so answers on a postcard. If any of the boys are reading this and remember, let me know.

St Fillan's 10 - 1  St Michael's

Saturday 23rd November 2013

League match 5

Cold but yet another fine day for football and the football gods were definitely shining down on us. St Fillan's scored three sublime goals started by Dominic Harrison (this is becoming a habit) with a 25 yard strike into the roof of the net. Aeden Crumlish scored two RvP'esque goals either of which would have made goal of the match. Both Aeden and Dominic's goals were awarded "goal of the match" status, they were that good. Man of the match went to Cian Newbury a P4 (aged 8) player who has been outstanding in his general play and playmaking and link up play. He was easily the smallest man on the park and nearly scored from a header ! Passers of the match went to Evan Newbury and David Hurrell who link the play well with their clever passing. Very good performance boys.

St Fillan's 2 - 3  St Paul's (S)

Saturday 13th November 2013

Friendly match 5

Smashing day for football again and this was to be a hard test against one of the association's toughest teams. 2-2 was the half time score in an exciting first half. Disappointing goals to lose by conceding daft free kicks and a dafter penalty! However we responded well and came back each time with good and well constructed goals. Liam Comaskey scored both and gets goal of the match for that. Michael Tomkins supplied the assist for the first goal and gets passer of the match and man of the match went to Roddy Colquhoun for a sterling performance in defence. Special mention to Dominic who puts in a power of work (as usual) Good work boys. We can definitely build on this.

St Fillan's 3 - 1  St George's

Saturday 9th November 2013

Friendly match 3

Another good performance from the boys and a couple of "new stars" in contention. John Gallagher got man of the match for a solid performance at right back, good job! Michael Gallagher (no relation) is a new P5 goalkeeper with excellent handling who made a stunning save in a 1 on 1. Goal of the match went to the excellent (as ever) Dominic Harrison who scored a belter. Well done boys, keep the hard work up!

St Fillan's 7 - 0 St Mirin's

Saturday 26th October 2013

Smashing day for football and a welcome visitor in the form of former head teacher John Hutchinson who was impressed with the display from the boys. First half was a little sticky but then we are always a slow starting team. Daniel McLafferty was not troubled much in goal but what he did have to do, he did well. Jamie Devlin was absolutely solid both going forward and defending hence the award of man of the match for him. Goal of the match was given to Cian Newbury a primary 4 boy of outstanding ability who (despite being the smallest boy on the park) scored a great header. A special mention went to Kai McKenna who also had a solid game. Liam Comaskey joined us for the first time because a couple of boys were sick or injured and he impressed, a solid performance from Liam well done to him and all of the boys.

John Paul II   1 - 6  St Fillan's

Saturday 5th October 2013

Another great day for football and the boys were up for it. The second half was a different team as the boys ran out and score three in quick succession (can we see more of this team please). Some very good football moves and some equally good finishing saw us comfortably 5 - 1 in the lead when Danny Medford scored a cracker from distance. Shay McFadden was given goal of the match for a jinky effort going through 4 challenges calmly in the box before steadying himself and finishing well. Men of the match were Danny Medford and an ever improving Joe Rigley with another impressive performance. David Hurrell was awarded passer of the match.

Well done all.

St Michael's 0 - 3 St Fillan's
Saturday 14th September 2013
A good day for a match and a good performance saw us take all three points from our first league match. Daniel Medford got man of the match for a great centre back performance. Evan McFadden scored a great free kick for goal of the match and Dominic Harrison put in a power of work in the midfield for a special mention.

Good result guys.

St Francis (Gorbals) 3 - 9 St Fillan's

Saturday 21st September 2013
Nice day for football and as it turned out a good game with end to end action. Good team performance with the boys playing some really good passing moves in phases. David Hurrell got man of the match for playing a solid role in the middle of the park. Jamie Devlin got goal of the match for a cheeky lob the bounced over the keeper and Evan Newbury worked his socks off linking the play with some really good passing link up play for passer of the match. The coaches got so carried away, that all of the team got a special mention 'a point' each.
Well done again boys.
