A Team Matches

Bi Millenium Cup Final

Thursday 23rd May 2013

St Fillan's 2 - 6 St Paul's

This was a hard game against the joint Championship winners. we started well and I thought we had the best of the first half and should have been leading but went in 2-1 down. The second half started very brightly for St Paul's and they quickly got three goals. Niall Cannon scored another superb free kick but unfortunately St Paul's managed to score another too. Joe Cannon and Mark Docherty were men of the match with Niall getting goal of the match and Jonnie Kavanagh and Evan Newbury getting special mentions for their hard work.

It was a sore one for the final game of the season, however the better team won on the day, unlucky guys.

Championship Semi Final

Tuesday 14th May 2013

St Fillan's 2 - 3 Lourdes

A waterlogged pitch but a clear night for football. Lourdes got off to the perfect start and ran through twice to score early on. We had to make a couple of tactical changes to try and get a grip on the game. We managed this and Jonnie Kavanagh got a goal to get us back in the game. Jonnie had a great game and got man of the match. Unfortunately we gave away a silly goal to go 3-1 down but kept working hard. Niall Cannon scored a superb free kick in the top corner to bring us back to 3 - 2 and despite battering at their door for the next ten minutes we just couldn't get the ball in the net. Evan Newbury gets a special mention for an excellent performance at right back. That happens sometimes and that's football. Another brave performance, unlucky boys.

Saturday 11th May 2013

Bi Millenium Cup Semi Final

St Fillan's 1 - 0 St Francis if Assissi

An early start for all and not the best of weather for this semi final on a big grass pitch. It has to be said that the boys were great from start to finish and really worked hard to close St Francis down and try to create opportunities for ourselves wherever possible. I may be biased but I thought that we should have won 3 or 4 nil however the result turned out to be 1 - 0 and Ciaran Scott got man of the match for 3 or 4 very good saves and one outstanding save near the end. Ethan Friel got a special mention for astute defending and Evan McFadden got the goal of the match. Well done all again. A final to look forward to, excellent.

Saturday 4th May 2013

St Fillan's 7 - 6 Lourdes

Friendly

Smashing day for a game of football and a good opportunity for both semi-final teams to check out the opposition. Some of the football early on was brilliant and Danny McKenna scored a cheeky wee near post number as part of our early onslaught. Mark Docherty was man of the match and Danny Medford got goal of the match for lobbing the keeper from 20 yards with his left foot. Danny should have had a hat-trick when he had a beautiful left foot curling shot come off the post unlucky! Evan Newbury gets a special mention for a sound performance at right back, not bad for a P5. Another solid performance boys.

Tuesday 30th April 2013

Bi Millennium Cup Game 3

St Fillan's 3 - 3 Our Lady of the Rosary

Tough game on a nice night but the boys started slowly again. We waited till we were 2-0 down before we started to play and battle for every ball (lesson learned ?) Daniel McKenna got us back into the game with strong run and deliberate finish Aiden Boyle was man of the match working very hard all over the pitch. It was his excellent delivery that Mark Docherty headed in for goal of the match to put us 3-2 in the lead. Unfortunately OLR came back at us and managed to equalise before the final whistle went. Work hard from the start boys and these games can be ours. Special mention goes to Ciaran Scott for another good one on one save, that kept us in it, well done all.

Saturday 27th April 2013

Final League Game (to win the league)

St Fillan's 5 - 2 St Michael's

A first for St Fillan's as we played 2 matches on the same day at the same pitch (would we cope?) The answer was an emphatic yes as we went on to win 5-2 St Michael's sent out a very strong team and even had us 2-1 down at one point, but this couldn't hold the boys back. David Hurrell was immense, tackling, laying off and creating countless attacks whilst doing some sterling defending and holding up play too; he got a  deserved man of the match for his troubles, star !  Ciaran Scott got a special mention for an impressive fingertip save at an important time in the match, and Niall Cannon got goal of the match for a sublime dead ball strike from the halfway line. Some excellent football being played and a deserved and impressive way to win the league.

St Fillan's Brother Eustace League Champions 2012/2013 !

Saturday 27th April 2013 (Take 2)

St Fillan's 5 - 2 Our Lady of Peace

Bi-Millenium Cup 2013 (Game 2)

A tough ask for the boys in the second match but fortunately we had 8 subs and were able to change all but three players.  Man of the match was the returning Dominic Harrison who was amazing (forgot how good he was) and easy decision for man of the match. Aidan Crumlish gets a special mention for some great work and good link up play down the left channel, (overlapping too I noticed). Goal of this match goes to Mark Docherty who scored a brilliant strike from the edge of the box into the side netting, excellent (he also had a couple of very good headers). A very good team performance and very pleased that all of the subs played and did not look out of place. Signs are good for next year too !

Saturday 20th April 2013

Penultimate League game

St Fillan's 4 - 0  St Columbkille's

A better performance against a much improved St Columbkille's was affected by a driving wind. We found it difficult to get out of our own half and all the play was down the one side. The second half saw us take advantage of the wind in our favour and we managed to score 4 good goals with Joe Cannon scoring the best of these. Ethan Friel and Ross Sommerville were jointly awarded man of the match as the defence was rarely troubled. Mark Docherty was passer of the match and Ciaran Scott was a special mention for some good one on one's. Well played all.

Thursday 18th April

Bi-Millenium Cup Game 1 League Section

St Paul's 4 - 0 St Fillan's

This was a tough game against the Championship winners elect (Manchester United). We started very well and kept them at bay for a good 20-25 minutes. Under pressure a goalkeeping error gave St Paul's a start and we added to that with a spot of poor defending. Bizarrely we then did exactly the same again to lose from a goalkeeping error and then a defensive error to lose eventually 4-0 The positives though are that without the errors we put up a good performance and if we can tighten up on that we would have given them a really good game. Joe Cannon was given man of the match for a solid performance.

Saturday 16th March

St Fillans 6-0 St Michaels

A really good performance from the team with all of them playing well individually and collectively. First goal was a cracking bulleted header from the man of the match Joe Cannon. Jonnie Kavanagh got goal of the match and Ethan Friel got a special mention for sterling clever defending as centre back.

Well done again boys.

Saturday 9th March 2013

St Columbkille's 4 - 5 St Fillan's

Played at the grass park in Burnhill Sports Centre this was one of the coldest games I have been at. We had a strong team despite missing a few players and started the game well. Jonnie opened the scoring with a 'goal of the match' strike from a good passing move. Ethan Friel also got 'goal of the match' for a superb strike from the edge of the box. Aiden Boyle and Michael Tomkins also scored in a good first half performance. St Columbkille's asked if they could play an extra player to make more of a match of it, which they duly did. This brought them right back into the game and it ended 4 – 5. Good first half performance but a lesson on not to lose such a good lead, extra man or not..well done boys.

Saturday 2nd March 2013

St Anne's 4 - 5 St Fillan's

Another great day for football, quite mild and clear and dry. We were so short of players for this crucial match we had to call on Ross's little brother Blair. Thanks to all who came from other matches and to Blair and others for helping out. St Anne's are a strong team and we knew we would struggle we were lucky to keep them out for so long but when they finally scored, it was still disappointing. We managed to score a cracking goal to equalise, a fantastic delivery from Niall Cannon and Aiden Boyle with one of the best headers I have seen in primary school football, goal of the match. Mark Docherty came from another match he had been at and made a huge difference. At this point we were 3-1 down and looking out. Mark managed to score one and brought other players into the game with good movement and holding the ball up, excellent play. Joe Cannon was superb at the back and gets a special mention for his troubles and his two goals ! We managed to claw our way back into the game and even managed to get 5-3 ahead. St Anne's managed to get a goal back but time was called for a real battling performance and a gutsy win. Really good stuff boys.

Saturday 23rd February 2013

St Fillan's 6 - 2 St Mirin's

Another good performance from the boys with Mark outstanding in the midfield scoring two and his performance earning a man of the match award. Jonnie scored three (slacker) and gets a goal of the match for his trouble. Passer of the match was Dominic who leads the way in passing football a very bright talent for one of our younger players.

Good result again boys.

Saturday 26th January 2013

St Fillan's 5 - 3 St Saviour's

A very cold day and a brisk start was made by St Fillan's to go 3 - 0 up in the first half. The changes that the coaches made saw us losing 3 goals but we scored another 2 to secure all the points, well done.

Saturday 19th January 2013

St Fillan's 6 - 1 Carmunnock

Friendly

Very fresh day ideal for football saw a great display from St Fillan's. We very quickly scored three goals the pick of which was a chip over the goalkeeper by Mark Docherty for goal of the match. This was despite Joe Cannon scoring an equally impressive overhead kick. Evan McFadden got man of the match for a very good display for a first time player, impressive. To be fair the whole team played well and the result was never in danger, well done boys.

Saturday 12th January 2013

St Anne's 2-2 St Fillan's

(St Fillan's lost AET and penalties)

A good exciting match with a disappointing end for St Fillan's. We started well and scored the first goal with a header from Ethan Friel. St Anne's managed to equalise and then we scored again with Joe Cannon finishing this time. with a minute left it was looking good till we gave away a free kick outside of the box. St Anne's were able to capitalise on this and scored to take the game to extra time. Things were still all even after extra time and so we had to go to the dreaded penalties. Unfortunately we lost on penalties although it was a brave effort. Ethan Friel got man of the match for a sterling performance including the first goal.

Saturday 15th December 2012

St Fillan's 5 - 1 St Francis (G)

Good game played in a very good spirit and a usual very slow start from St Fillan's. I think parents should ban the PS3's the night before a game. Mark Docherty has been playing at centre back for us lately and his footballing intelligence means that we are more solid with him there, another 'man of the match' performance from him. Jonnie Kavanagh is trying to keep up with 'Lionel' with 13 goals so far (unlucky for the opposition) and he gets goal of the match for that. Joe Cannon was commanding in the midfield and gets 'passer of the match' Good all round performance, well done boys.

Saturday 24th November 2012

St Saviours 0 – 8 St Fillan's

A touch on the chilly side but excellent conditions. The boys started very slowly with it being around 20 mins till we got our first goal. Aiden Boyle got man of the mach for his two well taken goals and Michael Tomkins got goal of the match. Evan Newbury is just another one of our impressive P5's who got passer of the match for some easy but well delivered passing and football brain thinking.

Well done boys.

Saturday 17th November 2012

League 6

St Fillan's 8 - 2 St Brigid's

Another good day for football, and a great result. Jonnie Kavanagh was a start for us this time and who knows we may do that again as he scored 4 and got man of the match. Dominic scored the goal of the match, and Daniel McKenna got passer of the match for a cheeky 'showboat' back heel pass.

Good all round performance if a little sloppy in the second half as the team were all chasing goals. Still, well done.

Saturday 10th November 2012

Carruth Cup Round 1

St Fillan's 4 - 0 St Thomas

A cold and damp day for football. There was a few changes made as the coaches tried to freshen things up and adapt to the opposition. Mark Docherty and Ross Somerville were put at the centre of defence and Dominic Harrison and Joe Cannon were put in the centre of midfield to provide strength and mobility. This worked well with the St Fillan's passing game coming out and although a little stilted at the beginning of the match looked good by the end. Man of the match was Mark Docherty (despite having played a match already). Joe Cannon got passer of the match and goal of the match went to Dominic for a wonder goal, taking it down on his chest and chipping the on rushing defender and then lobbing the keeper, class ! Ciaran Scott gets a special mention for a brilliant save that kept a clean sheet for us, well done to all, here's to Round 2

Saturday 27th October 2012

St Fillan's 1 - 3 John Paul II

It was a fine day to play football crisp and with a strong sun, lovely. Unfortunately that is not how the game went. The boys play really good sharp passes every training session and then in a game, that all disappears. We have not quite put our finger on why that happens, but we will continue to work on it. So with the passing breaking down and the general play not great, it was difficult to play really well. The referee (having said that) did say that St Fillan's had 23 chances and scored none. John Paul II had three chances and scored all three. A cracking goal was scored from nothing when the ball bounced close to Aiden Boyle who just decided to crack it from there and what a shot that was, excellent ! Goal of the match. John Stewart picked up man of the match for a great goal keeping display coming on after half time and having to make 4 or 5 good saves right away, well done ! Much to work on though boys.

Saturday 6th October 2012

John Paul II  3 - 2 St Fillan's

An open match that could easily have gone either way. The bouncing ball catching both teams out. John Paul II played well and never really let us get our normal passing game going. 'Junior' for John Paul II had a good strike and made good use of it with a cracking free kick. Ciaran had a man of the match performance in goal as did Dominic in front of him also for man of the match. A special mention went to Daniel Medford who did well covering for Joe Cannon.

Thursday 13th September 2012

St Francis (G) 3 - 8 St Fillan's

A good game played in a great spirit, 'the boys done well'. Some very good open play with Dominic Harrison on fire again and involved in everything and working very hard. Special mention for Joe Cannon who is playing well despite carrying an injury, passer of the match was Mark Docherty (again) with a sublime pass to the sprinting Michael 'bolt' Tomkins for an easy tap in. Michael got goal of the match for a brilliant first time half volley off the outside of his left foot, a very difficult skill well executed. 'Jon Stewart did enough in goals to stop another penalty well done.

Good result boys.

Saturday 8th September 2012

St Fillan's 1  - 3 St Anne's

Not a great performance from us. We started poorly and struggled for a lot of the match and never really got our passing going. Injuries and a few of the lad's not turning up certainly didn't help, however, we were beaten by the better team. This is a blow but there were a couple of positive's to take from it. Dominic Harrison was man of the match with an outstanding individual performance. Special mention for Kai, passer of the match. Onwards and upwards boys.

Wednesday 5th September 2012

St Fillan's 3 - 4 St Francis of Assissi

Good performance from the boys again with Joe Cannon and Jonnie Kavanagh leading the way with 'man of the match' performances. Mark Docherty got passer of the match and goal of the match went to Daniel McKenna. Jon Stewart gets a special mention for a superb penalty save from a strongly hit shot. The game was lost in the second half due to the coach (me) changing players and positions randomly. This was to give everyone a fair turn as we do in friendlies.

Saturday 1st September 2012

St Brigid's 1 - 7 St Fillan's

This was a traditional first game of the season and as it so happened our first of the league campaign. David Hurrel opened the scoring for us with a good instinctive follow up. This was good solid performance although some of that was to do with the strength of the opposition. Due to the teamwork shown by this squad, all were awarded 'man of the match' and it was difficult to argue with a 7-1 scoreline. Well done boys, good start ! Cracking goal scored by Dominic Harrison to finish.
