A Team Matches

Saturday 22nd May

Championship Cup Final

St Fillan's 5 - 0 St Monica's

This was another tough match in the bright sun with St Monica's denying St Fillan's in the first half. Although we did sneak one (1 - 0). The second half started brightly and we scored quickly and managed to add another three to complete a good 5 - 0 win. Aidan Galllagher scored a sublime effort earning him goal of the match with Niall Sheridan getting man of the match. There was special mentions for Conan, and Stephen for industrious performances. This rounded off an excellent season with a good strong team.

All of the boys can be pleased with their performances this year, well done again !

Tuesday 18th May 2010

Carruth Cup Final

St Paul's (S) 0 - 3 St Fillan's

This was a hard test for the boys and they took a long time to get settled. However they did and got a couple of well worked goals to lead 2 - 0 at half time. Conan getting goal of the match. A third goal was added in the second half by Joe McGuinnes. James McLaughlin got a deserved man of the match despite taking a few sore ones for the team. Special mention for

Niall and Danny.

Well done again boys.

Championship Semi Final

St Blane's 1 - 8 St Fillan's

Another excellent performance from the boys with a strong 4-3-2-1 formation giving an attacking threat. The boys were quick to score again and went from strength to strength throughout the match. This was even with two first team players out with injuries. Joseph Din got man of the match for a fine performance with Niall, Stephen and Sean getting special mentions. Mark Anderson also got a special mention for another very good goalkeeping performance. Goal of the match went to Conan who worked hard all game. Well done boys and on to the final.

Carruth Cup Semi final

St Roch's 0 - 8 St Fillan's

The boys took a long time to settle into this match but gradually Stephen Tomkins and Niall Sheridan took control. Tony Cannon got us going with the first goal a cracker of a left foot volley, that got him goal of the match, and Stephen and Niall both got  "men of the match" special mentions to Conan and Sean who were excellent, on to the final.

Saturday 24th April 2010

St Mirin's 3 - 6 St Fillan's

To win the title.

St Mirin's started really well and pegged us back for over 15 minutes. It was a very even game until we scored. Both the strikers got their two goals and were substituted for their trouble.

At this point St Mirin came back at us and scored three goals to get to 5 - 3, a bit nervy but we scored another to seal the game and relax the coaches and win the league at 6 - 3 Conan got goal of the match for a team goal passed from back to front. Mark Anderson

got a special mention for his best performance in goal this year and James McLaughlin had another "man of the match" sterling performance in defence. Well done boys an excellent season.

Wednesday 21st April 2010

St Columkille's 1 - 9 St Fillan's

Getting closer to the 30th April deadline and completing all of the games becomes a challenge. St Columkille's have struggled to get a playable park and with the help of St Brigid's we were able to get the game on. The boys were told that we had to start brightly and use our 4-2-3-1 formation to best effect. Sean took this to heart and scored in the first minute a smashing effort, getting him goal of the match. Conan is on fire too and scored 4 getting man of the match, Stephen and Niall were special mentions for being the "2" that held the midfield together. Another professional performance.

Saturday 27th March 2010

Carruth Cup Quarter Final

St Fillan's 11 - 2 St Bride's (Govanhill)

Again the boys were exceptional with a goal scored in less than two minutes. Great to see some very good football being played. Man of the match was Stephen Tomkins and goal of the match was a sublime individual effort by James McLaughlin, with a special mention to the tireless captain Aidan Gallagher. Semi - Final 27th April 2010 at Maryhill.

Saturday 13/03/2010

Carruth Cup (pre Quarter Finals)

This was a tougher match than the result suggests. We were pinned back for the first 15 mins and even went a goal behind after a well worked corner. This though, galvanised the team and they then started to work for each

other and battled to win each ball. Stephen Tomkins was shifted back into the midfield to help with this and we soon got back to our more usual play. Sean scored a hat-trick and took his tally to 40 goals for the season and got

man of the match. Goal of the match went to James McLaughlin for a well taken goal coming after he was swapped into the midfield. There was also a special mention for Charles McFadden who played very well at right back.

Another very good performance boys well done.

4 March 2010 – Friendly

This was a real test for the remainder of the St Fillan's team. Four players called in sick and three were playing for the opposition so we had to draft three younger players in. The Glasgow Team were (unsurprisingly) very strong and we were caught out by that in the first half. We managed to cope better in the second half. Niall Sheridan was again man of the match, Stephen Tomkins scored a superb free kick and Luke Sweeney gets a mention for stepping up well to the A Team.

Saturday 20th February 2010

What can I say ? The boys were brilliant and totally commanding for the first 20mins. We were 3 - 0 up when we were awarded a penalty, Conan took charge as it was for his hat trick. Conan scored 4 and got goal of the match. Man of the match went to Niall Sheridan who had another one of the matches where every blade of grass was covered. He was up front helping the attack and then back in front of the defence sweeping away and threats. Stephen Tomkins got a special mention for excellent tenacious play (look it up boys!). Some of the football played was of a very high standard, positive comments were being made by the parents of both sides.

Saturday 13th February 2010

Danny Barr picking up man of the match today. He has really improved since joining us this year and performs consistently well and improves week on week. Again another great performance, well done again boys!

Saturday 6th February 2010

Aidan Gallagher was man of the match with a commanding display of energy and guile. It was of course a great team performance and another good win. Well done boys !

Saturday 30th January 2010

Carruth Cup 2nd Round

St Fillan's 8 - 1 St Blane's

St Blane's came with a keeper who managed to save every shot in the opening 20mins. I left for a short while at nothing each and when I returned at half time it was 4 - 1 !! The second half saw the boys play even better with each goal being well worked. Conan Shields was man of the match, with Sean Harley getting goal of the match. Very good performance boys.

Saturday 12th December 2009

Another excellent controlled display from the team. Great passing and movement from the boys. Man of the match goes again to Niall Sheridan playing at centre back, goal of the match went to Stephen Tomkins for a cheeky chip and a special mention goes to Charles McFadden who (like Danny Barr) is really improving greatly week on week. Keep it up guys.

Saturday 5th December 2009

What can I say. Great performance ! Niall Sheridan with another commanding performance and Sean Harley with goal of the match. Danny Barr given a special mention as one of the most improved players that we have. Regan Wallace did fine in goals covering for Mark who has a sprained wrist.

Saturday 14 November

Carruth Cup 1st Round

We started really well again and created chance after chance without scoring. I was starting to think that it was going to be one of those days when the ball broke to Joe McGuinness on the left and he made room for himself and hit a fine shot into the back of the net. Joe managed to do the same again a while later to make it 2 - 0 at half time. This seemed to boost us and deflate St Catherine's as we quickly scored 3 to put us 5 – 0 up, Conan scoring three.  A very good team performance again with man of the match going to Niall Sheridan, goal of the match to Conan and special mentions to Joe Din, Sean Harley, and Joe McGuinness. A special mention also to James McLaughlin who made the tackle of the year to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. Excellent hard work and tracking back by James, well done! Well done to all again, another very good performance !

10th October - Friendly

I asked the boys to go hard at it for this test to see what we could really do against a good team. I wanted four goals by half time and I got exactly that. Sean Harley had his shooting boots on and got a hat-trick and got substituted for his trouble. In the second half we went on to score another 6 with everyone playing really well, Sean coming back on top bag another two goals. Man of the match was the superb Niall Sheridan again and goal of the match had to go to Sean for any one of the five ! James McLaughlin and Stephen Tomkins got special mentions for their hard work, James for another great defensive performance.

3rd October - Friendly

Another good game with some fine performances although again we create a lot of chances that we  don't seem to want to take (picky !). This was a game where Niall Sheridan came into his own, he was everywhere, attacking, holding in the midfield and defending/sweeping...very industrious. Goal of the match came from Stephen Tomkins who could choose from his bouncing bomb goal or his attacking header ! Special mentions went to Taylor Smith for some great deliveries from dead ball and James McLaughlin and Joseph Din solid in defence again.

Saturday 26th September

We struggled in the first half and only managed to pop the one goal in to lead 1 - 0 at half time. The boys quickly came right into it again though by dominating possession and with some outstanding wingplay by Tony Cannon (man of the match)

Saturday 12 September

Aidan Neely got us started with a fine half volley despite being closed down. That got him a deserved goal of the match. There was some slick passing and some very stout defending especially from man of the match Joseph Din (JD). James McLaughlin, Aidan Gallagher and Conan Shields all got special mentions for their hard work. Great result ! We were able to capitalise, big time.. Six goals were scored with the best a great individual effort by Ciaran Sharkey. Special mentions must be made of James McLaughlin and Joseph Din for some outstanding defensive work again. Well done to all...

Saturday 5 September

First league match of the season started slowly. It was 0 - 0 at half time. We scored first but let St Brigid's equalise right away. We then rolled the sleeves up and got down to the job in hand, as Niall Sheridan said "we started to play as a team !" some great goals scored including goal of the match from Niall and man of the match Aidan Gallagher. Special mentions to Conan Shields, James McLaughlin and Joseph Din.
