A Team Matches

Saturday 26th March 2011

St Fillan's 1 - 3 St Stephen's

This was always going to be our Nemesis.

It has to be said that the better football team did not win. Charles and young Jordan (P6) were men of the match and but for Charles the result could have been worse. Special mention too for Danny 'the cat' Boyle in goals and Ciaran who took a fine penalty.

We need to be stronger if we want to progress..

Carruth Cup Quarter Finals

Saturday 5th March 2011

St Paul's 4 - 0 St Fillan's

This was a tough match against a very strong team and although we held out for the first 20minutes, it always looked like we were going to concede at some point. We lost two goals in either half from set plays. This was disappointing given that we had covered this in training. Having said that

some of our passing was very good although we just couldn't get going due to a very strong opposition midfield and a superb centre back. Charles McFadden was our man of the match putting in another fine display of dogged defending. Unlucky boys, but sometimes the better team wins.

Saturday 27th February

St Francis (G) 0 - 8 St Fillan's

A fine day saw a good team put on a very good display. Man of the match Joe McGuinness definitely had his shooting boots on with a fine goal to start and another three to add to that. Ciaran Sharkey, and Lyle Querns got special mentions for good play and passing ability with Danny Boyle getting another mention for a fine goalkeeping display (must be the new gloves !). Dermot McGuire got goal of

the match.

19th February 2011

St Columbkille's v St Fillan's 1 - 7

Sticky match this with us scoring first for a change. We then shot ourselves in the foot by conceding a penalty (thanks John !). We went into the second half at 1 - 1 but quickly got 1 - 2, 3,4,5,6 and 7 as St

Columbkille's could not resist the onslaught.

Goal of the match went to Stephen McBride with man of the match going to Jack Neison for an awesome

display of dogged tackling and clearing (where has that been !) Special mention to Peter again for passing and to Danny for very good goalkeeping

and a bit of a wonder save to keep us at 1 -1, well done guys !

5th February 2011

2nd round of the Carruth Cup

St Brigid's v St Fillan's 1 - 3

A bad start again and went a goal down by letting a midfielder in our area without cover. We battled well again to get back to 1 - 1 at half time.

Joe McGuiness scored a fine goal again for goal of the match and we scored another 2 in the second half. Charles McFadden was man of the match Peter

Tomkins also getting a mention for passing and a special mention for good play from Marc Ronald.

15th January 2011

1st round of the Carruth Cup

St Angela's v St Fillan's  3 - 4

Not a great day and not a great start. We lost two sloppy goals from set pieces by poor defending.

To be fair the boys rallied and got it back to 2 - 2 at half time. We went on in the second half to score another 2 but let ourselves down by losing another sloppy goal to end the match  3 - 4 Not a great performance but a good result and fine battling spirit. Goal of the match was scored by Dermot McGuire a fine header. Man of the match was Charles McFadden again. Special mention for Peter Tomkins for passing well (new category).

Saturday 18th September 2010

St Fillans 6 - 0 St Francis

First match at our Toryglen pitch and it turned out to be a good one. Joe McGuinness did not have his shooting boots on with numerous chances squandered in the first half. Thankfully Dermot McGuire did not squander his chance with goal of the match. Ciaran Sharkey was man of the match again for a fine performance. He is coming on that boy. The rest of the team did well with some nice passing moves.

Saturday 11th September

St Fillan's 13 - 0 St Timothy's

Good game against St Timothy's with a tough start and they were difficult to break down. However once the second goal went in St Timothy's heads went down and St Fillans were able to play good passing football and press home the advantage. Ciaran Sharkey got man of the match with Joe McGuinness getting goal of the match. Impressive performance from Jordan at right back and Logan at left back (both P6's). Well done again guys.

Saturday 4th September

St Fillans 13 – 4 St Brides

What a great day for football. The sun was shining and the boys were raring to go. We managed to get a better shape to the team as everyone was getting to grips with their position and their role. Man of the match was the excellent Peter Tomkins again (P6) and Marc Ronald got goal of the match for a great 25 yard strike. There was a special mention for Ciaran Sharkey who worked very hard the whole game. Great to see the boys enjoying themselves.

Saturday 28th August

St Fillan's 5  - 6 St Francis of Assisi

Last pre-season game proved to be interesting and most entertaining (as long as you aren't one of the coaches). We looked very good in attack after we shuffled the pack due to losing two goals early on.

Ciaran Sharkey was moved to the centre of midfield which helped and Joe McGuinness and Dermot McGuire were put on up front to take the game to St Francis. We won the second half with the addition of Peter Tomkins and more shuffling (always look to the positives). Goal of the match went to Joe McGuinness (cracking effort) and Peter Tomkins got man of the match for an impressive performance for the young man.

A bit of work to do yet, but heading the right direction.

Saturday 21st August

St Fillan's 4 - 2 St Brigid's (friendly)

The first game of the new season and the boys took a little time to get going, but by the time the match finished we were looking like St Fillan's normally does, a really good footballing team.

Joe McGuiness was on fire scoring one and setting up two and not to mention his rasping drive which was superbly saved by the keeper. Dermot McGuire got goal of the match for his well taken goal and he was

highly commended for a McGeady'esk chip to the back post which Mark finished with a well taken header. All of the rest of the boys were given a special mention to get their points going.

Good result and a better than expected first performance, well done now

lets build on that !
